Out West

Take the Great Ocean Drive (a 38km circuit drive) and explore the coast west of Esperance. Esperance is a large and popular holiday centre with a great range of accommodation and tours. Sheltered swimming, coastal lookouts, whale watching between June and October and Australia's first wind farm are just some of the attractions. Archipelago of the Recherche - a group of granite islands stretch for 250km along the Esperance coast. Boat tours are able to provide sightings of fur seals, sea lions, dolphins and southern right whales. Cape Le Grand National Park has great beaches, sand plains, walking trails and the unusual Whistling Rock. To the north east are fossil encrusted cliffs, drifting dunes and the vast Nullarbor Plain.

The Nullarbor is 250 000 square kilometes of treeless plains, it is about as remote as you can get. When travelling across this vast stetch of Australia the highway sometimes veers to the coast and dramatic views of the 'Great Australian Bite' with its dramatic cliffs and swirling Southern Ocean.If you are lucky you might spot migrating southern right whales.Eucla is an isolated spot right near the border of Western Australia and South Australia and its rippling sandhills are worth viewing. Its also a great spot to take a break and there is accommodation, food and fuel available.

Western Australia's historic Goldfields region has a fascinating history and is still mined for gold today. Kalgoorlie-Boulder produces half of Australia's gold. Take a circuit of the open-cut Superpit on the Loopline Railway and visit the Australian Prospectors and Miners hall of Fame. Both Kalgoorlie and Coolgardie have spectacular historic buildings, real architectural treasures including the famous Marble Bar Hotel  (now the RSL).
