The Goldfields

This regions was the site of some of the largest, profitable and frenetic goldruses of the 1850's. Fabulous wealth, political upheaval - the Eureka Rebellion and a boom in the population growth were all direct results of the goldrush. If you look at the magnificent ornate Victorian architecture and grand gardens of Ballarat, Bendigo, Caltlemaine and Maryborough it is easy to see the wealth generated by gold in this era. We recommend a visit to the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery, Bendigo Art Gallery and the Castlemaine Art Gallery - there exhibitons are exceptional.

When you visit Sovereign Hill in Ballarat you will see history come to life in the re-creation of an 1860's goldmining township, complete with hotel, blacksmiths shop, printing shop and bakery.  Bendigo displays reminders of the sizable Chinese presence in the goldfields, including the Joss House and Golden Dragon Museum. Mining activities also discovered the mineral springs that led to the growth of the spa towns of Daylesford and Hepburn Springs.

At the foothills of the Pyrenee Range you can visit fine wineries and restaurants that feature fresh local produce on their menu. The regions range of accommodation inlcudes luxurious heritage buildings, vineyard cottages, guesthouses and upmarket resorts.
