Welcome to Victoria
Goulburn and Murray Region
The 'Mighty Murray' - Australia's most imortant river and the border between Victoria and New South Wales. Wide rivers, tranquil lakes, weirs and wetlands provide a year-round water playground for visitors to the region. Water-ski, paddle a canoe, fish, bushwalk or just relax by the banks of the Murray River. The River is also known for its huge towering red gums and abundant birdlife. The Goulburn River joins the Murray and some of Victoria's richest farming country lies in the Goulburn Valley and Shepparton region.
The Murray River's rich heritage of paddlesteamers and inland ports can be seen in Echuca (still a working port) and Swan Hill. Euchca's cafefully restored port is as busy today as it was a century ago. Take a river cruise or visit the Wharf Museum and historic buildings. Adjacent plains, irrigated with river waters, have rich harvests of fruitsand vegetables, grapes are also produced for local wineries - many of which have cellar doors for tastings. Riverside restaurants prepare fresh local produce or you can always make your own picnic basket.
Houseboat hire is a popular choice of accommodation so you can wake up on the river but there are fantastic golf resorts, cottages, bed and breakfasts and family friendly holiday parks.
