Mid North and Southern Flinders

The Mid North stretches from the coastal town of Port Wakefield, north to Port Pirie and east to Terowie on the road to Broken Hill.  A major mining and farming region now dotted with old stone cottages, rolling hills and vineyards. 

The Clare Valley - located in the Mid North is also famous for its fine wines. Clare is 136km from Adelaide and is situated amidst the picturesque wooded hills of the north Mt.Lofty ranges. In May the Clare Gourmet Weekend brings thousands of visitors to the area. Cycle the Riesling Trail, enjoy fine dining, spectacular views and visit stately Martindale Hall at Mintaro.The wineries of the Clare Valley are definately a major attraction but the Mid North also has fascinating townships like Burra – pick up a Heritage Passport and visit mine shafts, museums, and heritage buildings.  Auburn, Kapunda, Jamestown and Terowie have lovely old pubs, antique shops and many interesting tales of survival and hardship experienced during the settlement of this part of South Australia.

The Southern Flinders Ranges offers a great base to explore both the Mid North and the Flinders Ranges due to its fantastic scenery, produce and climate. The Southern Flinders Ranges has forests to explore just out of Wirrabara, fantastic pies from the Old Bakery at Stone Hut,  Laura's famous Folk Festival, Mt Remarkable's walking and cycling trails at  Melrose,  as well as becoming a new wine region for fantastic dry red varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz.
