Outback Horizons Downunder conducts personalised small group (maximum 4 persons) tours to outback Australia.

Our aim is to ensure that our guests experience, safely and in comfort, the ruggedness, isolation and grandeur of the Australian outback.

Your guide, John Humphrey, has 35 years experience travelling and exploring the Australian outback. John is an accredited tour operator with the South Australian Passenger Transport Board and also holds a senior first aid certificate.

John has been a South Australian police officer for 38 years and has served in a number of areas including country locations, officer in charge of the dog squad, internal audit and the United Nations in Cyprus.

Accommodation is in twin share, stand up, easy to erect and dismantle turbo tents. Comfortable 8.8cm super deluxe self inflating mattresses and quality sleeping bags are supplied. New pillows are supplied; however you are welcome to bring your favourite pillow from home.

If however your personal preference is for single accommodation, we will provide a dome tent at no additional cost. Please advise us of your preference when making a booking.

Your help is welcome in setting up and packing camp; the quicker it can be done, the sooner we can be relaxing around the camp fire or on the road.

On all the tours to the Kimberley and Kakadu, the itinerary is structured to enable you to visit many attractions along the way. You will experience the vastness of the Australian continent, with its beauty and uniqueness, its contradictions and contrasts.

A degree of flexibility exists on all tours when a group booking of four persons (or fewer if agreed) is made as the tour may be customised to suit the group’s wishes.

The Kimberley in the north west of Western Australia is a rugged area of pristine beauty and contrast with great rivers and gorges, mountain ranges, giant stark boab trees and spinifex plains.

Guests will see some of the fascinating examples of ancient Aboriginal art of the Kimberley and visit the old homesteads built by European pastoralists who carved out vast cattle stations in a hostile environment.

Our tours combine bush, National Park and camp ground accommodation. An opportunity for a shower or a swim will be available every couple of days – have a bush shower in between!

All guests are provided with a detailed itinerary. This lists day by day, the destinations and places of interest visited.

During the tour we will, while travelling, be in close proximity with each other for extended periods. Every effort will be made to provide for frequent stops and personal free time. Seating positions are rotated on a daily basis or more frequently when agreed by all.

Guests should be of reasonable health and fitness and bring all necessary medication for at least the period of the tour. Given that we are travelling in remote areas, it is important that you inform John (your personal tour guide) of any health concerns. All such matters will remain confidential.

Smoking is not permitted in the vehicle or tents.
