THE BARCOO SHIRE “HEART OF THE CHANNEL COUNTRY”


The Barcoo Shire is made up of three towns, Stonehenge, Jundah and Windorah. It covers an area of 61974sq klms and has a population of 460 residents. There is much to do and see around our region, and each town has something special.

Stonehenge

Situated 160klm south of Longreach, Stonehenge is a small but vibrant community. Come and stay a few days, Drive along the John Egan Nature Drive and visit the beautiful natural Rockholes. Stonehenge has many services, Stonehenge Hotel, Stonehenge Community Centre and the Caravan park. Call in and see Ishta at the information centre, drop a line in on the Thomson River or relax at the Hotel for a meal and drink.

Stonehenge is also famous for it’s annual Bronco Branding, Rodeo and Gymkhana, this is due to be held on the 18-19th August 2012 and is a great weekend.

Jundah

Jundah is the Administrative Centre of the Barcoo Shire and is just 800m from the Thomson River where a variety of R & R activities can be undertaken. The township hosts a range of services. Jundah Information Centre, public internet & library, Post office, Police Station, QGAP Office, Health Clinic, Jundah Hotel and Caravan Park, General Store and fuel as well as the Barcoo Shire swimming pool and Caravan Park. You can drive through our signed Nature Drive and learn about the native plants and grasses, from our region. The Barcoo Shire museum offers an insight into the lives of our pioneers and welcome signs to the town provide historic information. Jundah is also home to the beautiful Welford National Park. Welford is approx. 45klm south-east of Jundah on the Jundah-Retreat road. Drive out for a self drive tour on the sign posted tracks, climb the sand hills, canoe along the Barcoo River or set up camp at the little Boomerang water hole. Welford is a great place for the budding photographer and bird-watcher alike, and is a haven for the rare yellow-footed Rock Wallaby and Mulga Parrots, or see Pelicans, Brolgas and Black Swans. v

Windorah

Windorah is located close to the Cooper Creek flood plains.. It is a strong and active community, and has been the recipient of many awards reflecting this. Windorah has many services to offer, call into the Western Star Hotel for a meal and accommodation, the Cooper Cabins have great accommodation as well as the Caravan Park. For any Mechanical, tyre and fuel needs see Merve at the Windorah Service Stn. There is also a General Store, Post office, Electrical, Deep Tissue Massage and Beauty Therapy. Windorah has four Air Services a week, two from Brisbane and two from Mount Isa.
Windorah is the first town to be powered by Solar energy in Queensland. The Solar Farm consists of 5 dishes, each 13.7 meters across and 14.5 meters high. It has the capacity to generate 360,000kwh/year of electricity, which would otherwise require 100,000 litres of Diesel fuel. It certainly is a spectacular sight when driving into town. Windorah is home to the Cooper Creek where you can camp, fish, boat or simply sit and relax and watch the wildlife. You can also drive the12klm Nature Drive and learn about our local flora and fauna, Visit the J.C ruins on the road to Birdsville, walk up the Sand hills or visit the Museum.
