Gem digging … Mt Surprise Gems style. Here there are several options from which to choose. Join a morning dig at our claim with expert guides to assist and lots of fun to be had as well as morning tea in the bush. If you prefer we hire out equipment along with a mudmap so you can ’go it alone’. The choice is yours.

Dig for Topaz-Aqua-Quartz-Peridot-Sapphire-Moonstone-Agate-Gold-Fluorite-Spinel-Cassiterite or maybe a DIAMOND - 7 Areas within easy reach of Mt Surprise.

We offer a Morning Dig Tour that focuses on geology, gem mining and digging for gems as well as a fascinating 'Experience the Gem-Fields' Historical Tour.

This Tour Includes:

Pick-Up from your town accommodation
Drive in the comfort of our mini bus
Commentary of history flora & fauna
‘Smoko’ at our mining claim
Scratch a gem if you are lucky
Return to accommodation 5.30pm
our Guide will explain the basic geology of the area and the history of gem mining in the region.

This 3 hour trip takes you through a cattle station, travels some of the old Cobb & Co tracks where history abounds.
Crosses Elizabeth Ck deep into the granite country where tin mining and gem fossicking go hand in hand.
At ‘smoko’ you are welcome to wander and relax soaking in the beauty of the area.
Bring Hats—Sunscreen– walking shoes—camera are recommended.
The ground at the claim can be rocky and uneven with approx 50-100 m to walk to the shelter shed.

Our tours are very affordable as we want visitors to have the opportunity to learn about the gems and history of this fascinating region.

At the shop in town you can have a go with buckets of wash dry and wet sieving or try the stake a claim pits see how lucky you are.

Maybe its time to relax, unwind and enjoy a browse round the shop. See how faceting is done learn about lapidary equipment, see fine examples of minerals local and worldwide. The café offers great meals, snacks and real coffee. Jewellery and gems galore are available.
