The Stockyard Gallery & Cafe

Situated on, the Stuart Highway between the Mataranka Hotel and the Shell Roadhouse. Approx 400kms south of Darwin.

“In the Heart of Nowhere" lies a tropical garden cafe and art gallery.

The Mataranka area was home to Aeneas and Jeannie Gunn. Jeannie wrote the famous book about Elsey Station in the early 1900’s titled ‘We of the Never Never’ The book and movie are now part of Australian folklore.

Travellers can relax and browse through the art gallery showing the talents, of local artists from the surrounding Mataranka and Roper River district.

The gallery also offers a range of territory books, postcards, magnets, whips, didgeridoos, information booklets and souvenirs.

The Stockyard Gallery and Café was established in 1986. Take a break and enjoy cappuccino, delicious mango smoothies, iced coffee, light snacks, muffins,cakes and more... all in the relaxed atmosphere of our shady tropical garden. Local Aboriginal art, paintings and books by Territorians, souvenirs and gifts to take on your travels. Experience the local birdlife and meet "The Fizzer".

You can't miss The Stockyard Gallery because guarding the front of the Stockyard stands a 4 metre high statue of Henry Peckman better known as “The Fizzer” the mailman from the movie “We of the Never Never “.
